Never Regret but Reflect

I was chatting with Lynne over in Scotland the other morning on Facebook and the question came up, how is school going? My answer to Lynne was that I had decided to end this college experience for a number of reasons.

With my current schedule working full time, getting to work hours before anyone else and feeling it by the time I get home around 6 PM or later, I was asking too much of this 64 year old body and mind. Also after examining the course material I realized that to succeed and not just do the bare minimum required many more hours of attention than I had to give. Add to that the college math which involves areas like algebra, geometry and equations I have never even seen before meant not only doing the work but learning a whole new math that this brain was not ready to tackle.

Said all that to say that I am not sorry for being unsuccessful but sure wish someone had explained more fully what I was really getting into so I could have made a better judgement call. No one likes to admit they are not capable of doing a task and where this is concerned I am happier ending it now than down the road after adding torment to my already stressful life. A really good lesson was in fact learned.

  1. There is no point in attempting something if it ill only make life harder. I took on Japanese a few years ago and it was extremely gruelling trying to learn it after working all day. I stuck at it but it took its toll and other, more important things suffered.
You have made a wise decision and anyway it frees you up to try something more fun-ho about bungee jumping!

  2. I felt swamped just reading about all that you were tackling, Odie. There's no shame in deciding that something is not right for you and cutting your losses. Maybe you'll find another area of interest to explore. Keep life fun. That's my motto. Have a great Sunday, good buddy!

  3. Hi dear friend. I love that saying, Never Regret, but Reflect - very wise. I also felt that you had been very brave in taking on that College Course, with working full time and being away from home for such long days. Gosh, I felt exhausted just thinking about it. Well done you for trying it, and well done you for making the correct decision to call a halt. Don't you just love Shady's comment - Keep life fun!! Take care and hope you're having a good weekend. Hugs.

  4. You can't say you didn't give it a good try Odie and that's all that matters. You tried!

  5. Odie, I can barely remember how to do my times tables; I could never take a course with math in it. Hey, I admire you for taking the course while you are still working and have family who need you. Very difficult.
I started a painting and drawing course once and found out I was allergic to the pastels and paint. I lost about $500 on that one. :)

  6. It's important to recognize your priorities, and what you'd have to do to succeed in that course wasn't worth it to you. No shame in that. That's one of the perks of maturity!

  7. Odie-
You would never have known all of that if you didn't try it....I admire the fact that you tried...hugs to you that you were able to realize that it wasn't going to work with your priorities..
    hugs!

  8. Several lovely things DO come with experience and age. You are able to say with authority...I tried it and it's not for me. And we know that it's best to realize what is right for us and go down the road 'better' travelled. All that said, Odie, I sure do admire you for jumping into untested waters and experiencing something new.
Now get some well earned rest and as Tom says...Keep life fun!
    Hugs~

  9. I considered a Uni course but in the end decided it was too much of a commitment. I found instead a 6 week course in something that really interested me. Perhaps something short term might be something to consider. Just for fun

  10. I went back to study only working part time and even that was hard work and stressful. You did the right thing though, to try, because otherwise you'd always be wondering what if...? Now you know, and your life is enriched even by this.
