Odie's childhood pets

Being the only boy in the family I spent a lot of my time in the woods exploring, thinking, being away from my sisters but mostly being with my constant companion Poochie. She was with me for 13 years and we both loved the woods and nature in general. She was with me year in and year out so when she finally passed quietly and unexpectedly one night it was heartbreaking. I had many dogs after that but they were never as special as Poochie. This is the only picture I have of her and will treasure it always.

One year dad really made me happy when he bought a couple of young goats. I named them Lilly & Billy and we kept them in the fenced in area of woods behind our house. I still remember going down to the fence and calling their name and you could hear them running through the woods to get to me. That started my love for goats and it is still strong today. They are such loving animals and as well vulnerable to dogs and other predators. I would have some today but it would require a huge expense to keep them protected so instead I will make trips to the Celebrity Dairy in Siler City and love on theirs. When you see a pen of goats think of Odie.

  1. That's right! You do love to visit those goats and now I know where your love of goats came from. There's nothing as special as a boy and his dog. It is an experience that I was denied and always resented. To compensate I bonded with other kids' dogs and couldn't wait to become an adult so that I could finally have one of my own. Needless to say I love to look at pictures of dogs as well as all other types of animals. Thanks, Odie!

  2. How wonderful to have a special dog through your childhood. Now I know why you love goats! Ever since I saw them in a petting zoo and they tried to eat my shoelaces, I have loved goats. You were lucky to have two as a child! I did think of you last summer when I saw some goats at a fruit stand.

  3. As Tom said, we now know where your love of goats comes from! Two lovely pictures of a boy with his beloved pets! Two lovely memories! I will not look at a goat again without being reminded of you and this story. I can imagine how devastating it must have been for you when Poochie died! You were so blessed to have had her friendship and devotion for 13 years of your childhood and, she, yours in return! Big hug xo

  4. We never had pets as youngsters - my mum would always make excuses!
The Kids had goldfish for a while. but i think we were a boring family - the fish would jump outta the bowl!
But Lilo is bringing delights to the family - just had to wait for the right time and the right pet!!!!!

  5. I will certainly think of you my friend whenever I see goats in future. I wondered why you loved them so much. Now we know! I am loving these posts, showing your boyhood photos. I now know why you love dogs so much, as you were brought up with little Poochie and obviously loved her very much. I am so glad that you have that one photo of the both of you together.
