Have you had your Oxalis today?

During my morning walk with Rocky and Soffie this morning I was careful to look for one of my tasty treats that nature provides in abundance here in NC in the form of Oxalis or as my dad told me as a child, "goat grass".  Of course when Rocky saw me reach down to pick some he had to investigate and would pluck some out of my grasp but I don't think he actually ingested any.
Let me assure any skeptics that it really is good and if you happen to see any that has volunteered in your yard or fields give it a try. You just might be surprised. Maybe these pictures will aid you in identifying for yourself.

Bon Appetit

  1. Hi Odie. Very pretty little flower, but I'm wondering how you actually eat it. With a salad perhaps?

    1. Yes you can eat the leaves, flowers, pods and basically the whole plant as a salad. Of course for me I just pluck it and eat it as I walk. Have been doing it since I was a child.

  3. This is a great post. Odie, because it inspired me to do some research. The oxalic acid found in goat grass, sour grass, wood-sorrels, false shamrocks and other related species can be toxic to humans if ingested in high doses but the amount you get from chewing or eating a few of leaves and flowers at a time is the same or less than you'd get from eating a spinach salad. Indian tribes used the plant for a variety of purposes, including to alleviate thirst on long trips, treat mouth sores, cramps, fever and nausea, and some even considered them an aphrodisiac. Very interesting, good buddy!

  5. I don't think I've ever seen it, but if I did, I would try it in a heartbeat. Looks very healthy. Rocky was just checking to be sure it was safe for you!
