Odie's Bran Muffins

5 tsp Baking Soda
1 Cup Butter
1 Cup Sugar
2 Cups Water
4 Eggs
4 Cups All-Bran Cereal
2 Cups 40% Bran Flakes Cereal
5 Cups All Purpose Flour
1 Qt. Buttermilk
1 Box Raisons
This will take a "BIG" bowl. I have used this recipe for many years and modified from the original I found in an old Jeff Smith, Frugal Gormet cookbook.
Begin by dissolving the baking soda in 2 cups of boiling water & set aside to cool. Cream the butter and sugar and beat in the eggs. Stir in the remaining ingredients and finally stir in the soda water. Give the soda time to work and let it sit at least 15 minutes before filling the muffin pans. Bake at 375 degrees for about 30 minutes.
The mix keeps well in the refrigerator for up to 6 weeks so you can bake them fresh daily. The cooked muffins also freeze well.
Hope you enjoy them.

  1. These sound really good! Have you ever put something besides raisins in them? I'm thinking chocolate chips because...well...life's always sweeter with a little chocolate LOL!

  2. I *will* try this once I've translated the weights and measures! How big would a box of raisins be? Sounds delicious, so thank you for sharing.
