Lunch with Linda for her birthday

Linda & I had our lunch date for her birthday and it was very enjoyable. We ate at David's Restaurant in Roanoke Rapids, NC which is the larger city about 5 miles up the interstate from our home.

Our reservations were for 11:30 so we beat the church crowd and so it didn't feel so close with bodies. It is a narrow restaurant but makes up for that with length. The walls are covered with attractive pictures and has a border of grape vines with bunches of grapes going around the top of the walls. David, the owner is up front greeting everyone as we walk in.

On Sundays he has a large buffet with lots of choices and a great salad bar and dessert bar as well. Some of the things available were; fried chicken, meat loaf, chicken pastry, vegetable lasagna, mashed potatoes, candied yams, blackeyed peas, garden peas, carrots, mini cheese biscuits, hush puppies, shrimp, fried fish & lots of desserts including fresh banana pudding which Linda tried and enjoyed.

The sad thing is that we wished we had been earlier and will definately be back. Another major plus was that the whole bill was only $21.52 for the both of us and we were stuffed.

  3. In case either of you pop back over here "hush puppies" are simply a mixture of corn meal dropped by spoonfuls into hot oil and fried. they are usually cone shaped and are great hot with butter on them. A southern staple.

  4. I knew what Hush puppies are. My friend in Alabama, Don, quite often tells me about the different foods. He is a big fan of fried Okra too.
    Sounds like a lovely day.

  5. Sounds like you guys had a great time. Sounds like a good deal on price too. One thing Joe and I are going to try to do this year is visit restaurants that we have not been to. Then I hope to review them on my blog. I have joined a site called Urbanspoon. I have a wish list of many places to visit on my page on the site. You also can read reviews and post your own reviews. Check it out.
    Glad you had fun!
    We love hush puppies....yum:-)

  12. Don from Alabama here visiting the first time compliments of Mynx:

I cook great hush puppies. Mine include the meal, a bit of sugar, self-rising flour, an egg, buttermilk (or just plain milk with a dash of vinegar), and a goodly amount of finely chopped onion. Mine turn out round if fried in deep canola oil or sort of flattened if cooked in a lesser amount. I don't use a recipe. I just put things together in what looks like the right amounts to me. The mixture has to be rather thick so it will drop off a spoon and stay together when it hits the hot oil. No butter needed on mine.
